This is Friday the 13th, and an unlucky day for an American fighter pilot reported shot down this morning somewhere near Hong Kong Harbor. The skipper checked his charts for the position and shook his head sadly.

“Much as I’d like to try to pick up the fly-fly boy,” he said, “we’d be crazy to risk it.”

A later report informed us the pilot was waiting patiently in a rubber boat for a PBM rescue plane being sent to the scene to attempt a water landing, pick up the airman, and take off again under the very noses of the Japs. We hoped they made it but never did find out.
